Michigan Adult-Use, Medical Cannabis Sales Reach $3.6 Billion in 2023

Why it matters: The Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) in Michigan reported over $3.6 billion in adult-use cannabis sales in 2023, showing a 30% growth compared to the previous year. Michigan has also seen an increase in the number of dispensaries, reaching a total of 750 by the end of 2023.

What they are saying: CRA Director Brian Hanna emphasized the agency’s commitment to transparency and communication as the industry continues to expand. MiCannaPros founder Harry Barash praised the CRA’s strict rule enforcement, which has helped reduce black market sales. However, industry veteran Eric Jacovetti believes that the CRA has only started to uncover black market operations and that more work needs to be done.

The big picture: Michigan’s cannabis market is experiencing significant growth, with high sales and an increasing number of retailers. The CRA’s enforcement efforts have been successful in curbing illegal activities, but there may still be ongoing challenges in tackling the black market.

What to watch: Some experts predict that Michigan’s cannabis market may reach a saturation point soon, leading to a decrease in supply and potentially impacting prices. Additionally, the CRA plans to establish a state-run testing lab to address concerns about private labs potentially manipulating product results. Building trust in testing procedures can have implications for pricing and consumer safety.

My take: Michigan’s cannabis market expansion is promising, but it also presents challenges in ensuring transparency and preventing black market activities. The CRA’s efforts to enforce rules and establish a state-run testing lab are positive steps towards addressing these challenges. However, the industry should remain vigilant in monitoring market saturation and maintaining consumer trust.
