Why it matters: The poll conducted by the Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics (BCSP) reveals that a majority of American registered voters support legalizing regulated therapeutic access to psychedelics, as well as easier access for researchers and the removal of criminal penalties for personal use. This data indicates a growing acceptance and interest in psychedelics within the American public.

What they are saying: The poll shows that 61% of American voters support legalizing regulated therapeutic access to psychedelics, with 35% expressing strong support. Additionally, 78% support making it easier for researchers to study psychedelic substances, and 49% support removing criminal penalties for personal use and possession. The BCSP’s Executive Director, Imran Khan, emphasizes the importance of understanding and responding to public opinion regarding psychedelics.

The big picture: The poll results suggest a shift in public sentiment towards psychedelics, with a majority of voters expressing support for regulated therapeutic access and research. This indicates a potential for further policy reforms and advancements in psychedelic research and therapy.

What to watch: The full results of the Berkeley Psychedelics Survey will be published on July 12, providing more detailed insights into public opinion on psychedelics. Additionally, the growing interest and support for psychedelics may lead to further research, policy reforms, and potential advancements in therapeutic practices.

My take: The poll results reflect a significant shift in public attitudes towards psychedelics. The increasing support for regulated access, research, and the removal of criminal penalties indicates a growing recognition of the potential benefits of psychedelics in therapeutic settings. It will be interesting to see how these findings influence policy discussions and development in the future.
