Why it matters: The results of this Stockton University poll shed light on the habits and attitudes of New Jersey consumers regarding the legal cannabis market, as well as some of the challenges and opportunities facing the industry in the state.

What they are saying: The poll found that about one-third of New Jersey adults have used cannabis or cannabis products since recreational cannabis was legalized, with 47% using it for recreational purposes, 39% using it for both medical and recreational purposes, and 13% using it strictly for medicinal purposes. Despite high prices, 69% of users bought products from a licensed cannabis dispensary, and 86% were satisfied with their experience. Demographic insights from the poll show that men and younger people are more likely to consume cannabis, and black people have the highest usage rates.

The big picture: The poll suggests that there is demand for safe and high-quality cannabis products, even at high prices, and shows support for dispensaries in people’s own towns and for the potential addition of cannabis to the hospitality industry. However, there are still challenges facing the industry, including the lack of dispensaries in certain areas and the prevalence of unlicensed sellers.

What to watch: As the legal cannabis market in New Jersey continues to evolve, it will be important to monitor consumer attitudes and behaviors, along with challenges facing the industry, such as access to dispensaries and affordability.

My take: This poll provides valuable insights into the habits and attitudes of New Jersey consumers regarding the legal cannabis market, and highlights the need for ongoing research and attention to the challenges facing the industry. It will be interesting to see how attitudes and behaviors change over time as the market continues to take shape.
