New Mexico Regulators Revoke Licenses for Two Cannabis Farms

Why it matters: The New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department has revoked the licenses of two cannabis farms, Bliss Farm and Native American Agricultural Development Company (NAADC), for multiple violations including exceeding plant count limits, not using the state’s track and trace system, and unsafe conditions. The farms have also been fined $1 million each for their illegal activities. This crackdown on non-compliant cannabis businesses aims to uphold public health and safety while ensuring compliance within the industry.

What they are saying: The Cannabis Control Division (CCD) emphasizes that the illegal activities at these farms undermine the work of compliant cannabis businesses across the state. The CCD’s main priority is compliance and ensuring safe access to cannabis products for New Mexicans. Director Todd Stevens hopes that the sanctions serve as a warning to other potential violators, reminding them to adhere to the laws and rules set by the state.

The big picture: The revocation of licenses and hefty fines imposed on Bliss Farm and NAADC highlight the state’s commitment to enforcing cannabis regulations. The violations discovered during inspections showed blatant disregard for public health and safety. This enforcement action underscores the ongoing need for compliance and the importance of resources allocated to enforcing regulations in the cannabis industry.

What to watch: It will be important to monitor how the cannabis industry in New Mexico responds to these enforcement actions. Other cannabis businesses may become more vigilant in ensuring compliance to avoid similar consequences. The state may also continue to strengthen its enforcement efforts to ensure that all cannabis programs are grown and regulated within New Mexico, as required by law.

My take: The enforcement actions against Bliss Farm and NAADC are necessary to uphold the integrity of the legal cannabis industry in New Mexico. Non-compliant businesses not only jeopardize public health and safety but also undermine the efforts of legitimate cannabis businesses. The fines imposed serve as a strong deterrent, sending a message that violations will not be tolerated. It is crucial for the state to continue enforcing regulations and for cannabis businesses to prioritize compliance to maintain the industry’s legitimacy and reputation.
