Why it matters: Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana (NMM) is working to collect enough signatures to qualify its cannabis legalization initiatives for the 2024 ballot. The group needs signatures from 7% of state voters and 5% of voters from 38 of the 98 Nebraska counties to qualify. NMM has collected signatures in 16 counties so far and aims to add four more by the end of 2023.

What they are saying: NMM is urging supporters to send in any remaining signature petitions as soon as possible to ensure an accurate count in preparation for next year. The campaign manager expressed optimism and praised volunteers for their hard work in collecting signatures. The group is determined to keep petitioning the government and legalize medical marijuana despite legislative opposition.

The big picture: NMM’s efforts to legalize medical cannabis in Nebraska have faced challenges in the past, including not meeting the signature requirements in previous initiatives and encountering opposition from government legislators. However, the group remains committed to providing patients with legal access to medical marijuana.

What to watch: NMM needs to collect 125,000 signatures for both of its petitions by July 3, 2024. The group’s success in collecting enough signatures and qualifying for the ballot will determine the future of medical cannabis legalization in Nebraska. Additionally, keeping an eye on the response from opponents, such as Gov. Jim Pillen, will shed light on the challenges NMM may face.

My take: It is encouraging to see the dedication and perseverance of NMM and its supporters in advocating for medical marijuana legalization. With a significant number of signatures still needed to qualify for the 2024 ballot, it will be crucial for the group to continue mobilizing and collecting support. The opposition from legislators highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding medical cannabis, but hopefully, the increasing momentum and public support for its legalization will eventually prevail.
