Why it matters: This survey conducted by EO Care highlights the need for medical advice on marijuana treatment. It shows that a significant percentage of Americans are using cannabis for health reasons, but many feel more comfortable using it if it is screened and dosed by a clinician. It also emphasizes the potential benefits of cannabis in reducing the use of prescription drugs and alcohol.

What they are saying: The survey found that 18 percent of respondents have used cannabis for health reasons, while 19 percent have used it for recreational purposes. The top three reasons for cannabis use were anxiety, pain, and sleep. The survey also revealed that 88 percent of medical cannabis users reported a reduction in their use of prescription drugs, alcohol, or both. Additionally, 51 percent of respondents said they would be likely to use cannabis if it were offered by their health plan.

The big picture: The survey shows that a significant portion of Americans are using cannabis for health reasons, but many feel the need for guidance from clinicians. The lack of medical advice on cannabis use is a concern, as tens of millions of Americans are using it without knowing specific product recommendations, dosage amounts, and potential health risks. This situation highlights the need for readily available medical advice on marijuana treatment.

What to watch: It will be important to monitor how healthcare providers and employers respond to the findings of this survey. Employers may have an opportunity to support their employees by offering guided cannabis care as part of their health plans. The availability of clinician guidance on cannabis use could lead to improved health outcomes for individuals who rely on it for various health reasons.

My take: The results of this survey underscore the importance of providing medical guidance on cannabis use. As more states legalize cannabis for medical and/or recreational use, it becomes crucial to ensure that individuals have access to accurate information and guidance from healthcare professionals. By offering clinically guided cannabis care, employers have the potential to support their employees’ health and well-being. However, it is essential to ensure that the guidance provided is evidence-based and takes into consideration individual health histories and potential risks.
